Ree Drummond, aka the Pioneer Woman, is known for her long, flowing red hair (along with her amazing recipes and affordable home goods, of course). Now, she’s sharing a behind-the-scenes look at how she achieves her signature look. Hint: It involves two styling tools that are must-haves.
The 54-year-old star dropped a tutorial on Instagram, joking in the caption that she’s “a Velcro roller influencer now.” In the video, Ree can be seen with her hair in Velcro rollers as she brandishes a barrel curling iron. She pulls out one bottom roller, and then follows with the barrel iron, curling her hair backwards away from her face.
She keeps moving around her head the same way, all while smiling as she works. Finally, Ree messes up her curls a little with her fingers, fixes her part, and voila—voluminous curls. She did a final touch with the curling iron around her part and followed with a spritz of hair spray, but that was pretty much it.
Ree hopped on over to the comments later to give more details about her routine. “Dry your hair until it’s almost dry but still slightly damp,” she said. “Roll hair in large Velcro rollers, rolling in a backward direction.” After that, she says, it’s a good idea to wear them around the house for an hour or two “occasionally blowing the rolled hair with the hair dryer for a minute or so.”
“When you’re ready, remove the rollers one by one, curling each bunch of hair as you go: clamp close to the head and roll from there, leaving an inch or two of hair at the bottom,” she said. “Keep going and let the curls cool, then run your fingers through your hair to style at the end. Spray with a texturizing spray and go live your life!”
People were all about it in the comments. “You’re a pro!!!” one said, while another chimed in with, “So pretty, Ree!! 😍😍.”
Ree knows people love her hair (I mean, fair), and she’s shared a few other tips about how she keeps it looking so healthy and shiny. One tip is that she uses Aveda’s Color Conserve line on her locks. “I’m a natural redhead but I get a lot of help from the bottle,” she said on her Pioneer Woman website. “So I use Aveda’s Color Conserve shampoo and conditioner, which are extra gentle to keep the color from fading.”
She also shared that she’s used vinegar to try to reduce build-up in her hair and to make her tresses shiny.
A few people noted in the comments how amazing Ree looks, and she told Entertainment Tonight last year that she lost 60 pounds by maintaining a calorie deficit, weighing her food, and exercising regularly. “I exercised 6 days a week,” she said. “Sometimes twice a day (morning walk, evening rowing machine), sometimes just once.” She also cut down on sugar, stopped drinking alcohol, and upped her protein intake.
Overall, Ree said she feels better these days. “I have more energy. I’m more motivated to take on projects and put things on the ol’ calendar,” she said. “Feeling good bleeds over into all aspects of my life. And that has changed my outlook.”
